19th Century Barber Chair Restoration

$5,000

This mid-19th Century barber chair came from a doctor’s office in LA.  The wood is likely chestnut with only a single coat of varnish.  The seat, which had been recovered at least four times, was the typical springs and horsehair pad under a faux leather cover.

The back reclines and the headrest raises and lowers on brass hardware.

The restored chair back shows how well the brass hardware took a shine.

I removed the original finish as it was too far degraded to save.  Red chestnut stain under three coats of shellac give the wood a fine rich color.
